Description
Presented for sale is a pair of sunglasses owned and worn by Elvis Presley according to accompanying paperwork.  These sunglasses have been generously donated to our small church congregation with the hopes of using the proceeds to build a small country church.  (We are currently holding services in a garage!)   Our benefactor bought the sunglasses 6 years ago at Antiquities in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas after a successful night at the tables!             As you can see in the picture, the original price tag was $14,995.  Included is a letter signed by Mr. Joseph Kereta,  who vouched for their authenticity. Mr. Kereta has been an avid collector of Elvis memorabilia since 1962.    Please check his background on the web for verification.   In regards to the accompanying plaque,  it appears that a very lucky gentleman named Jamie  met Elvis and had dinner with him one evening and was given the sunglasses.  These glasses ended up at the Antiquities shop in Caesar's Palace and our benefactor purchased them there.  I would love to hear from Jamie to know the whole story,  but  we don't always get what we want!       Included in this auction are the EP sunglasses, case, display stand,  signed letter from Mr. Kereta, Jamie's plaque, and the original price tag.            We encourage you to do your own research.  Mr. Joe Esposito was Elvis's top aide for 17 years.  He has answered many questions about Elvis.  In regards to his sunglasses, he states "The first sunglasses Elvis bought were made of a silver-coated plastic with chrome-type arms and graduated portholes.  I think those came from France.  Around 1972 Elvis started having them custom made.  Those frames were metal and he had his initials put in the bridge and gold TCB's on the arms.  Later on he went to big solid gold frames and stopped wearing the silver ones.  I don't know how many custom pairs he had made, but it was a small number, maybe 10 total".      These glasses are beautiful.  The "EP" in the bridge is detailed and very unusual.  On each arm is the famous "TCB"  (Taking Care of Business)motto with the lightening strike going through it.  They are, of course, heavier than a normal pair of sunglasses.  There is really nothing to compare them to.  Once in a great while, something like this comes along.  It is a joy to hold these in your hands and imagine them on Elvis's face!       We are a small congregation of country people who are trying to be as honest as we can.  It doesn't seem possible that we have been handed this opportunity, but  we have spent hours trying to find contradictions in what we have been told and shown.  We really believe we have an authentic pair of sunglasses special ordered by Elvis.   Similar pairs have sold  for $23,000 in 1994 (Butterfield & Butterfield Auction)  and  $32,500 in 1999 (Guerney's Auction).  We welcome viewing and appraisal of these sunglasses at your expense.     Elvis sang gospel songs like no one else.  We hope he is smiling down on us as we dream of a little church that would ring with the sound of those songs!   If you can afford this dream,  we appreciate your bid!           XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX       I am revising this auction.  It has been 18 hours since I listed these sunglasses and I have been bombarded with questions.  I am going to continue this auction for 1 more day,  then take it off  of Ebay and get better pictures done.  I had no idea that this auction would gain such attention!   I am a church organist/farm wife who has been given the awesome responsibility of selling these sunglasses.  Mr. Kereta has called me and given me great advice. I will take that advice and do this right.  So, this auction will be removed tomorrow  (Thursday) and I will hopefully relist again on Sunday evening with better pictures.  I will attempt to get  a picture showing the "France" emblem on the ear piece.  I apologize for the inconvenience, please have patience with me!   On Sep-04-08 at 15:51:58 PDT, seller added the following information:       XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX       (Thursday evening, Sept 4)  This is (hopefully !!) the last revision on this auction.  I have contacted the owner of the sunglasses and we have decided to continue the auction since we have an opening bid.   At this point, it does not make sense to cancel, then relist it.  We will have better photos taken and post those on Sunday evening.  Again, thank you for your patience!      On Sep-07-08 at 15:01:23 PDT, seller added the following information:     Here are the promised photos.  These sunglasses are exactly as the present owner purchased them from Antiquities.  It appears that the left arm (as you look at them) has been broken off and glued back on at sometime in the last 35 years.  I wish I knew how,  but I don't!  They are very sturdy and solid, but you can see the crack clearly in the photos.  The lens have a few small scuffs and tiny scratches.  They are hard to see, but again, I want any prospective bidders to know this.  These glasses have obviously been worn, used, and loved!        Now for the good points!  The lens are clear on the bottom, then gradually darken towards the top.  The word "France"  is imprinted on the left ear piece as you look at them.  The back of the "EP" nose piece clearly shows the "14 K"  imprint.    I also weighed a pair of normal glasses at .7 ounces.  These sunglasses weigh 1.7 ounces.  The arms have the circular holes that graduate in size towards the front with the signature "TCB" and lightening bolt.  Please email if you have more questions.  Thanks again for your patience! On Sep-11-08 at 14:21:05 PDT, seller added the following information:***************************************************************************************** One final update!    Many of you have asked about the composition of the sunglasses.  The owner took them to a specialist and was told that the arms and the "EP" nosepiece are both metal.  We were excited to find out that the frames are, indeed, PLASTIC!!      Also,  the lens are not prescription.       Thank you for the fascinating correspondance.  I believe I am fast becoming a die-hard Elvis fan!   I have learned so much.  I will take one more minute of your time to pass along an interesting theory suggested by more than one fan.  Many of you believe  that Jamie (mentioned on the plaque) was a female, not male!  It was apparently more likely that Elvis would invite a female for drinks and/or dinner than a male.   I'm told that Elvis was a perfectionist.  Some have suggested that these might be a pair of the first sunglasses that he purchased.  Maybe he - or someone else - broke them and since they were broken, he gave them  to Jamie.       What an interesting theory, but please remember....... I am only passing on suggestions given to me.  I have no idea what the story is behind these sunglasses.   Regardless,  I have had a great time learning more and more about Elvis from people who seem to know what they are talking about!   For those who condemn him because of possible misuse of drugs and other faults,  I think each of us would have to have walked in his shoes and dealt with all his day to day pressures before we dare to judge!   Thank you to all that have taken the time to write - from the prospective bidders to those who can not afford to bid, but sent good wishes for our small church to succeed.  God bless each and every one of you!
