Description
The Toronto Pop Festival Poster 1969 Performers: The Band The Velvet Underground Chuck Berry Steppenwolf Sly & the Family Stone and many others. Venue: Varsity Sataium Toronto, Canada Date: Sat., June 21, 1969 Sun., June 22, 1969 The Toronto Pop Festival took place in June 1969 and featured a diverse selection of musicians. Other bands included Dr. John, Johnny Winter, Procol Harum, Al Kooper and Blood Sweat and Tears. One of the highlights of the festival was the appearance of The Velvet Underground on Saturday night. As recalled by a fan, "The Velvets came on stage looking austere and detached, they were unfamiliar, unsettling and exciting. In contrast to that day's pleasant musical offerings, the hard-edged urban sound of the Velvets seemed stark and at times brutal-with frenetic guitars driven by the slow steady beat of Maureen Tucker playing an oddly inverted bass drum. Listen to The Velvet Undergound perform Heroin at The Toronto Pop Fest. "In all ways, Toronto's Pop Festival was a winner. There were no incidents between police and crowds, which have marred similar U.S. pop festivals; no on-stage obscenity (which city hall feared and, consequently, had withheld its whole support); and no third-rate music. The police were competent and, mainly, sympathetic and the audience respected them. What the festival achieved was the unique gathering of Toronto - and North American - youth in one place to hear an unusually wide cross-section of con-temporary music. It may also have been the final emergence of pop as an important Canadian cultural activity." - Winnipeg Tribune. Toronto, ON, June 21, 1969: Robbie Robertson and The Band perform at Varsity Stadium Saturday. Description This beautiful, high-quality poster is not an original.
