They decided that they should record a song together as a b-side for George's This Is Love single. They got together at BOB DYLANs studio and TOM PETTY got involved when Harrison had left his guitar at Toms house! That first song was Handle With Care, which they deemed far too good to be a throw away b-side and so the Wilburys were born. There was no mention of their real identities, all taking on a Wilbury name (ala Ramones) Dylan was Lucky Wilbury, Harrison was Nelson Wilbury, Orbison became Lefty Wilbury, Lynne became Otis Wilbury and Petty was Charlie T Jr. Adopting pseudonyms and creating a fictional back story, did something interesting for the members of the Wilburys. Freed of the baggage of being a Beatle, or the God-like genius of Dylan, or the legendary Big O, they were free to just have some fun and play some music. Something most of them hadn't been afforded the opportunity to do up to that point (or since). In the case of Dylan and Harrison in particular, they seemed to revel in the joy and silliness of the Wilburys. Dylan is REALLY funny on both Wilburys records, and it's a reminder that his humour was a big part of why he became such an icon in popular culture. Volume One was released in October 1988 and was a mammoth success and all the members were enjoying writing and playing together that plans for a second album and talk of a tour. Sadly Roy Orbison, passed away in December 1988 only a few weeks after the release of Volume One. Deciding that Roy (Lefty) was irreplacable (although there was talk that Del Shannon had been asked), when the TRAVELLING WILBURYS resurfaced in 1990, they all had new Wilbury names. Dylan - Boo Wilbury, Petty - Muddy Wilbury, Harrison - Spike Wilbury and Lynne - Clayton Wilbury. Deliberately misnumbered Volume 3 was also a huge hit, but not as successful as the first album.
