Description
This drawing is a one of a kind original by Jerry Garcia. It is signed in ink on the front by the artist himself. Jerry Garcia was a deeply talented artist, working first in ink then expanding into watercolor, acrylic, and even digital media. Jerry began his career as a visual artist at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute). He started painting oils on canvas and his last group of paintings made in 1958 at CSFA reflected a growing passion for what would become his life’s work, they were still-lifes of an acoustic guitar. His artistic career was put on hold during the Grateful Dead's rapid ascent to Rock n' Roll fame. It wasn't until a near death experience with diabetes in the 1980s that interrupted the Dead's intense touring schedule that Jerry was given an opportunity to refocus on his talent as a visual artist. In a prologue written by Deborah Koons Garcia in, “Jerry Garcia: The Collected Art Work” she remembers, “Jerry Garcia was an artist it was his nature, his work, and his avocation. Like many people of our generation, Jerry was obsessed with transformation. His path involved focusing hand and eye mind body and spirit to create, to express himself.” In the foreword of the same book, Mickey Hart describes how in Jerry’s ink drawings, "One line would play off the other spiraling, cascading into streams of consciousness with no beginnings, no endings, just flow.” The featured work for sale, “Calligraphy Mouse” embodies this description. Gallery director and owner, Christopher Murray, hosted the first exhibition of Jerry Garcia’s art in March of 1991 at Govinda Gallery in Georgetown. The show was titled, "J. Garcia: Paintings, Drawings, and Prints," and opened March 16th, 1991. Christopher Murray’s extensive knowledge of Jerry Garcia the musician and artist was crucial in bringing forth both the premier publication, “Jerry Garcia: The Collected Works,” (Insight Editions 2005), and providing the necessary platform from which Jerry would launch his career as an artist. “Calligraphy Mouse” was included in Jerry’s groundbreaking exhibition at Govinda Gallery in 1991, and has been in a private collection since that time. This is the first opportunity to purchase this extraordinarily rare and important drawing by Jerry Garcia.
