Description
This NO RESERVE auction is for an ULTRA-RARE sword and sheath "sculpture" created by legendary Master comic artist Charles Clarence Beck (1910-1989) in 1975. Beck was one of the creators of Captain Marvel (in 1939) and was the chief artist of THE BIG RED CHEESE until 1953 when the character ceased publication. He later drew the good captain again for the DC Comics revival of the character in the early 70's. This multi-media piece is one of two made at that time: Beck was my friend, Mentor and art teacher, and he made this one for me and a second for DC Comics artist/SHAZAM! publisher Carmine Infantino (both as gifts) in '75. Beck was living in North Miami Beach Florida at the time he made this sword. I remember saying to Charlie "Hey, old Shazam didn't have a sword!", and he said "He always keeps it hidden beneath his robes..." hehehe... This NON-WEAPON was made from lightweight illustration board and balsa wood etc. (weighs just under 7 oz) the sword and sheath together are 26" long and 5 1/8th" at it's widest point. It is painted metallic silver and gold and also brown and black. His signature is set in relief on the upper "blade" of the sword (as well as the year, 1975). Be sure to note the LIGHTNING BOLT MOTIF on the edges of the blade itself and the clouds-and-lightning logo at the top of the blade. When Beck presented the sword to me, he said, "See these Greek letters on the sheath? ... which (as he pulled the sword slowly out) spell...the word...SHAZAM!" (as revealed in english on the sword blade itself). That was really cool! C.C. Beck Wikipedia Listing This piece of work is GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC and has been in my possession ever since it was presented to me in 1975, and I will issue a certificate of authenticity along with it to the purchaser. This is a really exquisite collectible piece of original artwork, and is one that will continue to rise in value in the years to come. Bid on it...buy it...then it's yours! That's it!
