Description
THE FACINATING STORY BEHIND THESE CHAIRS: In the early ninthies I was working as a salesman, traveling around the southwestern part of Norway, visiting different companies, schools, hotels and so forth. On one of these trips I ended up at a hotel at Finse named FINSE 1222. During the evening after dinner, I sat in the hotelbar and came to talk with the barmaid. Remembering that "The Empire Strikes Back" was partially shot around Hardangerjøkulen glacier, wich is not too far from the hotel, the conversation easly came into that theme, me being more than fairley filminterrested. She told be that some of the crew actually stayed at the hotel, albeit it wasnt a hotel at that time, more like a large mountain cabin or similar. She said this must have been in around late spring / early summer of 1979, because she remembered being told that the hotel was totally refurbished the year after for the look it has now. After that refurbishing they also changed the name of the establishment from Finse Fjellstue to Finse 1222. "1222" referes to the altitude above sea level where the hotel is located. I thought maybe they had some props or pics of the celebre guests, and asked her about it. She sad that they have some pics that was signed by some of the crewmembers, Unfortunatly, the manager, that quit the job in 1980/81 had taken most of them with him. But they had some pics on display and also a winter combat suit wore by one of the extras. She happened to mention a couple of chairs that where left behind too. They where, as she remembered, decorated by some of the crewmembers for producer George Lucas that was about to visit the location during filming, and some "Sleepy" witch I, to this day, have not figured out who is/was. It might have been an inside joke directed to the movies director Irvin Kershener. I wouldnt know, but I do know one gets very sleepy in  that thin air. It might have been the cause of the nickname. Anyway. The chairs where locked away for the evening, in a repairshed, or room, and the key wasnt available until the next morning, but she warned me about them being somewhat crude, after having been used by the working men during the hotelmakeover many years earlier. Witch probably where the reason they where left behind by the manager when he quit. The next morning I was shown the chairs. They where, as the barkeeper told me, a bit crude with the hardwood somewhat dried up. But they where still pretty solid. They had  also been used on a "sundeck" at the hotel and because of the very strong mountain sun, the original navy blue canvas is faded to the grey you see in the pics. The old navy blue colour is seen inside the canvas in the loops to the back support and also in both ends of the seatcanvas where the sun didnt reach. The lettering "LUCAS" and SLEEPY" is a bit more faded than the pics show, cause my flash reflected it good. but they are fully readable. I asked, very politely if they where for sale. To my surprice, I could have them for free, since I was so movie interrested. Off course an offer like that I couldnt turn down. One must remember that Finse is a bit away from everything, so the collectormarket up there in the ninthies where close to unknown.   This excellent gift made me think of starting to collect "directors chairs". but that was a task not to easy, so to speak. I managed to collect a couple of more chairs from another film later, but I found out that this was very difficult and time consuming, and my life taking a new direction with family, house and other trivias :) soon let the collectorfever cool down. I`ve had these chairs in my attic since I accuired them and I hate to part with this gems, but to finance my other hobby, I think that some serious Star Wars fans out there will have more "use" of them. I feel a starting price at $450 is not too much, thinking of the impact the movies have had thru the years. Also for the hardcore collector, a "buy it now" price at $2500 is available. I will claim the right to close the auction at any time, if the buy it now price is offered to me. Payment due within 7 days of auctions ending. I accept PayPal only. Please note that I have been in contact with Finse 1222 several times lately to try to verifiy the chairs autenthity, but all those who worked there in "The Star Wars period" almost 30 years ago, has either retired or quit. The rumors also says that George Lucas never visited the set at Finse, but I have in my possession a letter from Chief of Marketing at Finse1222, Andreas Skogseth, dated 13th of may 2008. It confirmes that George Lucas stayed at Hotel Finse 1222 during the filming of the scenes.  This signed letter, written in English on the original Finse 1222 letterhead , is off course included in the auction. By bidding on this auction you agree with the content in the auction text. Unfortunatly I have no more info available regarding these chairs so please, bid with the intent of buying. If you have zero or negative feeedback, please contact me first for verification. SHIPPING: The chairs is quite heavy so the following shippingcosts will be added to the winning bid: To the US, Greenland, Faerøyene: $195 Europe:$95 Norway:$30
