Description
John Wayne Saddle   In my capacity as an eBay Trading Assistant, I'm very pleased to be able to present for auction a piece of history that has been owned by two true, larger-than-life American legends.  This fine saddle was owned by legendary actor and American icon, John Wayne (May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979).  John Wayne used the saddle a couple dozen times and gave it to Chuck Roberson (May 10, 1919 – June 8, 1988), legendary cowboy, actor and stuntman who worked as John Wayne's stunt double for nearly 30 years.  At the time of his death, Chuck Roberson was one of the most respected stunt men in Hollywood  The saddle is now in the possession of Chuck Roberson's grandson, Charles (Chuck) Hart.  The saddle shows slight usage (used only by John Wayne) and is in excellent condition.  The saddle was custom hand crafted in 1970-1971 by Don Myers of Myers Saddle Shop in Yukon, Oklahoma.  Myers Saddle Shop is and has always been a one-man operation.  I recently spoke with Mr. Myers, who told me he's been making saddles for 50 years, and is still making them.  This saddle's serial number is 207, which designates it as the 207th saddle made my Don Myers.  Mr. Myers describes this as a working saddle with embellishments.  The horn cap, conchos and "JOHN WAYNE" nameplate (cantle plate) are Sterling Silver and were made by Sunset Trails, America's premier Western Silversmiths.  The letters "JOHN WAYNE" on the cantle plate are 18K Gold.  This differs slightly from Michael Wayne's description on the supporting documents, but this is confirmed information, directly from Don Myers, the saddle maker.  The horn cap features the "26 BAR" brand, John Wayne's Hereford cattle ranch in Arizona.  The saddle was originally presented (as new) to John Wayne, in person, at an annual Hereford cattle sale in Arizona. The documentation that authenticate the ownership and subsequent transference of ownership of this saddle are dated September, 2000, and were provided to Charles (Chuck) Hart by Michael Wayne, John Wayne's eldest son.  Michael Wayne passed away in 2003.  The saddle is presently in Southern California, and pictures and documents presented here are scans.  The actual, original paper documention will be provided to the winning bidder of this fine treasure.  Payment will only be accepted by either of the two following methods.  1.  Bank wire transfer to Charles Hart or his mother, Charlene Roberson.  ... or ... 2. The eBay-approved escrow service, Escrow.com (www.escrow.com).  It will be incumbent upon the winning bidder to pay for any and all wire transfer or escrow fees.  The saddle may be picked up in Southern California, but it will be the sole responsibility of the winning bidder to arrange and pay for any crating or shipping of this item if it is determined that shipping will be necessary.  Of course, arrangements details will be coordinated between seller and auction winner (buyer). NOTE:  Several Museums have authentic John Wayne saddles ... that were either personally owned by John Wayne, or were from one or more of the many films that John Wayne stared in.  This saddle offered in this auction is a genuine, vintage (37-38 year old) saddle, owned and rode by John Wayne.  Please do not confuse this saddle with the recently offered (2007) John Wayne 100th Anniversary Commemorative "Courage" saddle by Circle Y.  While that commemorative saddle is a nice saddle ... it is a replica.  A total of 164 of them were produced, and they are "factory saddles" ...  they're neither old or vintage, and were not made by a single person, but rather by piece-work.If you have questions or if you may require additional information, please click on the "Ask seller a question" link and if I'm unable to answer your question myself, I'll direct your question to Chuck Hart and I'll get back to you.  Thanks for looking!!   Letter from Michael Wayne to Charles (Chuck) Hart: Description of Saddle:Description of Photo Exhibits:Notary Confirmtaion for Documents:PHOTOS:   Japanese Buyer Assistant
