Description
This mask was created by makeup designer John Chambers for use by actor Roddy McDowall to wear in the 1971 movie Escape From the Planet of the Apes. His character was Cornelius. John created a mold of Roddy McDowall's face (shown in the pictures), and the prosthetic mask was formed to the mold. This auction is for both the mask and the prosthetic mold. The letters inside the mask (shown in the photos) were used by the studio to catalog the mask. John Chambers developed his makeup techniques using his background in medical prosthetics, work during World War II where he used his skills to give disfigured veterans a more normal appearance. The Planet of the Apes series was his first major work in the motion picture industry, and he was awarded an Academy Award for his work on this series. John was the focus of a recent television documentary, "Into the Shadows: The CIA in Hollywood," which explored the relationship between Hollywood makeup artists and the CIA. For example, he used his makeup skills during the Tehran Hostage Crisis to successful get people out of Iran. He was given special recognition by the CIA for his work supporting their missions. Roddy McDowall stared in four of the five Planet of the Apes movies, was also in Cleopatra, My Friend Flicka, Lassie Come Home, How Green Was my Valley, and many others. How did I get this? Believe it or not, my father was in the CIA and while working with John Chambers the two of them became friends. I was a young child and I was terrified of the Planet of the Apes movies. John gave the mask to me so that I would know it was all make believe, and I would no longer be afraid. I didn't want to tell this story while either Roddy or John were alive, but John died in 2001 and Roddy died in 1998, and with the expose in the television series I guess there are no secrets anymore.
