Description
This is for a rare hard to find Conn Ltd Baritone Military USN US Navy Sax Saxophone. Serial # dates it 1917/1918. It says on the Bell: "Patent date of Dec 8, 1914."I 119954 B42xxx LOn front of bell it is engraved and says:C.G. Conn LtdElkhart IndianaThen has an engraved anchor and says "USN" (U.S. Navy Band sax).Under the Anchor (on the front) it says:Great LakesA.5505 The letter A. may not be a letter cause its hard to tell. Condition: **NOTE** I am not a pro sax player, these are just my observations... It looks like it could be Silver and Gold. (saxes of that era were silver and gold plated) A few small dings, a few scratches, some finish has worn off in a few spots as seen in the pictures. Pads look good, it's had some past soldier work done as seen in the pictures. Needs to be polished. It has been in the closet for a while so it could use cleaning, polishing, adjustment, etc. I can tell you it does look good when polished but I did not want to disturb the finish as it is now. I will leave that up to your discretion when you get it. Sax plays ok, again I am no expert on this as I watched my brother play it from time to time. Neck serial number matches the sax serial # which is a good thing. Mouth piece is a Selmar. The high Octave key pad does not make full contact with the air hole on the neck piece, that will need some adjustment. I have used a piece of clear tape to temporarily close that hole off when I was playing. Also included are 2 reeds with a reed holder and the pipe cleaner for the mouthpiece (also have the original box for the mouth piece). Case is in excellent condition, with only a couple of scuffs from some shade tree carpenter popcorned the walls of my closet and when I pulled the sax out it done scuffed the side of the case slightly. There is one piece of black finish where my finger is that is starting to lift as seen in the picture. Considering its age, it is in remarkable shape for being 89 years old. I'd imagine some cleaning/polishing wouild really make this vintage piece pop. Interesting Stuff: Some research that I was able to do suggests the following (BUT bear in mind the #2 may NOT be related AT ALL!!!) 1. Now around 1917 the Navy had a Training Station at "Great Lakes" as engraved on the Sax bell. 2. Also on 1917 The March King John Phillips Sousa was assigned to Great Lakes Naval Training Station as Conductor where he started "his recruit band." John Phillips Sousa Info. Is it possible this sax was used during this time, at that same Naval Training Station, I do not know and can not seem to verify this. According to records anywheres from 8000-50,000 recruits went through the Great Lakes Training Center during 1917-1919 (also known as World War I). The military likes to keep their records secret so I was unable to track it down to a particular player.
