Description
The Crickets The "Chirping" Crickets 1957 Textured Cover - Yellow Label DJ Promo LP record Buddy Holly's first album release Brunswick BL54038 Here is your chance to buy for Christmas one of the rarest rock L.P.'s from one of the greatest rock and roll pioneers of all time. In 1957 Buddy Holly was part of the group The Crickets. He was only 21yrs old at the time. Their 1st single release on Brunswick records was the song "That'll Be The Day". When the song began getting radio air play Brunswick records, a subsidiary of Decca records, had the Crickets go and record their 1st LP. This LP is the 1st historical LP record Buddy Holly was involved with. The very 1st pressings made were the radio disc jockey copies that said "Sample Copy- Not For Sale" on the bottom on the yellow record label. That rare LP is what I have for sale. It is believed that there were only 200 of these rare DJ promo copies ever made. And only an estimated 10% of the orignal 200 are still in existence. The record was played at a radio station in 1957 to get The Crickets and Buddy Holly's career started. The record has hairline scratches on both sides especially where the songs "That'll Be The Day" and "Oh Boy" start side 1 and side 2 respectively. This record was only released in mono, not in stereo. This L.P. still retains most of its original shine. The yellow disc jockey record labels are still in great shape but have a few spindle marks. I would rate the actual record in VG condition. The matrix number on the record is MG 6037 T1 on side 1 and MG 6037 T2 on side 2. It also has a 1P on both sides. The cover is the textured cover that were only made in the fall of 1957. In 1958 to save on money Brunswick records only produced regular covers without the texture. The cover is in VG++ condition. The front textured cover is in almost perfect condition with only minor wear on the white borders and minute flaking on the mouth side. The front cover says "printed in USA" in small print on the bottom right corner. There is no writing on either side of the cover. The spine has no splits and says clearly BL-54083•The"Chirping"Crickets•Brunswick• BL-54083. The top of the cover also has printing and says The "Chirping" Crickets. This is the only record cover I have seen that has printing on the top spine. Maybe this was convienence for the DJ to read. There is a 2inch unrepaired seam split on the top near the mouth of the cover. The bottom has no splits and just a little wear on the bottom right corner. The back of the cover has no writing and just a little wear along the spine. In 1957-1958 when Buddy Holly was becoming an early rock n roll figure, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were teenagers in high school and became heavily influenced by Buddy Holly persona and song writing style. Their 1st studio recording was that of Buddy Hollys "That'll Be The Day". And the Beatles name was created because of the similarity of the name Crickets.Overall this is a excellent example of a very rare 1st album of one of the founders of rock n roll "Buddy Holly". This record is listed in Goldmine price guide at $800.00 for the regular commercial version, NOT this rare DJ copy which would be worth twice as much because of its rarity because few ever existed.Know a Buddy Holly fan?
