The daughter of an Irish-American Ziegfeld girl and a Spanish flamenco dancer, it's no wonder that Rita Hayworth grew up to be one of the most beautiful, and talented, women of her generation. After a series of relatively small parts in Hollywood films, Hayworth got her first big break when she was cast as the femme fatale Dona Sol in Blood and Sand (1941) opposite star Tyrone Power. With her red hair (dyed for this role, it would quickly become her trademark) and her smoldering charms, Hayworth was a sensation. Throughout the war years, Hayworth's fame grew through a succession of popular musicals, such as You'll Never Get Rich (1941), and My Gal Sal (1942), all of which used her dancing ability to great effect. During the Post-War years, she explored her dark, seductive side once again in pictures like Gilda (1946), The Lady from Shanghai (1948), and The Loves of Carmen (1948). Therefore, when Columbia was casting their newest Biblical epic, Salome, in 1953, they set out to find a beautiful woman who could be both canny seductress and innocent maiden, at the same time calculating and sympathetic, and who could arouse the passions of both audience members and King Herod himself with her exotic and sexy Dance of the Seven Veils. They didn't have to look far, as Rita Hayworth was the perfect choice. Hayworth's Salome is a far more complex character than is seen in previous versions of this oft-told tale. Not simply the cold-blooded killer that was portrayed by, say, Theda Bara, this Salome is more a victim of her conniving mother Herodias (Judith Anderson). It is Herodias who bargains with Herod (Charles Laughton) for the execution of John the Baptist (Alan Badel) in exchange for Salome's provocative dance, not Salome herself, and the titular heroine is even granted a happy ending in this Technicolor triumph. All in all, this is a very different, yet no less effective, telling of the well-known Biblical tale. Offered here is an extremely beautiful and evocative Italian 4-folio for this classic film, with art by the renowned Anselmo Ballester. Considered by connoisseurs to be the father of the Italian movie poster, Ballester's career stretched from the earliest days of the cinema, in 1914, until the early 1960s. His lush, romantic style, as seen in his paintings for such posters as On the Waterfront (1954),Sirocco (19510, Stagecoach (1939), and 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), influenced not only future poster artists, but book cover illustrators as well, as can easily be seen to this day. Inarguably, however, the image here is one of his greatest masterpieces. Perfectly capturing the sumptuous grace and beauty of Hayworth as she performs the provocative, and climactic, Dance of the Seven Veils, this luscious image, with its captivating color scheme, is a perfect representation of one of Hollywood's most incandescent stars. This museum-worthy piece had slight fold wear, as well as small chips in the upper right image area and the upper left corner, but professional restoration has rendered these slight flaws virtually invisible, resulting in an exceptionally attractive poster with a like-new appearance. Posters featuring Ballester's art are always extremely desirable and collectible, as he is one of the top names in the entire poster hobby. This particular poster, the perfect combination of star, title, and artist, and featuring one of the legendary Ballester's greatest works, is sure to be coveted by many advanced collectors, so don't miss out on your chance to add this rare beauty to your collection.
