Description
A very rare, authentic and very real painted broadside and printed playbill of the play 'Golden Boy' starring John Garfield was to run from July 2 thru July 7, 1952 at the Falmouth Playhouse in Coonamessett(Cape Cod, MA). Unfortunately, the broadside and playbill were never used, as the star of the show, John Garfield died from a heart attack on May 21, 1952, some six weeks prior to that performance. Garfield, nee Jacob Jules Garfinkle, son of Russian Jewish immigrants was born in NYC 1913 and raised in Brooklyn. He had a troubled youth and after his mother died, he was sent to a school for difficult children in the Bronx. There he was introduced to boxing and acting. He is acknowledged as the predecessor of such Method actors as Brando, Dean and Clift. He often played brooding, rebellious, working class character roles. His Broadway debut was in 1932. He became a member of the Group Theater, playing a supporting role in Golden Boy, later to lead the starring role in the revival 1952 play which never came to fruition. The broadside measures 44 in. x 52 in. Oil paint on canvas. Condition: soiled, paint craquelure, rolled and torn edges. The playbill is 14 in. x 8 in. Toned. Partially missing corners. Slight curling to the paper. Like a painting in similar condition, restoration is easily possible. I can see it hanging in a studio loft in NYC. PROVENANCE: I am selling these two items for a descendant of the Plymouth Colony settlers who have lived in the Falmouth area for generations. Broadside will be shipped rolled up via USPS Priority Mail. The playbill will be sent in a box. Insurance is required on both. GOOD LUCK! Clear images, accurate descriptions and condition reports with a money back guarantee if I mis-represent an item. Our goal: offer interesting items, factual information & accurate condition reports at fair starting prices. No Second Chance Offers, as many are scams sent by evil minds from Eastern Europe & Africa. Continental USA. USPS Priority Mail w/ Del. Confirmation. Insurance is mandatory. The World: First Class Mail International & NO insurance. Contact me for quote to your country. Your bidding is an acceptance that I'm not responsible for non-delivery. USA insurance: Up to $50.00=$1.70. $50.01-$100=$2.15. $100.01-$200.00=$2.60 $201.01-$300.00=$4.60 $301.01-$400.00=$5.55 $401.00-$500.00=$6.50 $501.01-$600.00=$7.45 $601.00-$5,000=$7.45 plus .95 per extra $100.00.
