Description
Current Lot John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band LP Test Pressing Billed as the first "official" John Lennon solo album, the 1970 release John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (SW 3372) is considered one of the finest accomplishments of his career. Recorded between September 26 and October 9, 1970 at Ascot Sound and Abby Road Studios, the album was done simultaneously with Yoko Ono's debut solo album Yoko Ono & the Plastic Ono Band using the same musicians and production team (Lennon/Ono/Phil Spector) with nearly identical cover artwork. The concept for this critically acclaimed piece of rock music history was based on therapy Lennon went through, after the Beatles breakup, for his traumatic childhood abandonment, isolation, and death of family members. Writing the songs was considered cathartic for his emotional state of mind at the time. The Plastic Ono band consisted of Ringo Starr, Klaus Voormann (a member of Manford Mann), Billy Preston, and Phil Spector. Before an album is pressed for distribution, a "test pressing" is done to assure that the pressing "plates" are not pocked, warped, or inferior and that the quality of the recording is up to standards. Depending on the record company (in this case Apple/EMI) a handwritten title is placed on the white label. With this LP, only the numbers 1 and 2 in black felt tip pen appear on the label and "John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band" is written in ballpoint pen on the sleeve. Once it is shown to be a good pressing, the label is used and mass production begins. This label is in NM condition, with the album also projecting a NM appearance with some very light surface scratches and one long buffing scratch on Side 1. Accompanied by an LOA from Sotheby's, this item is a nice addition to any record or Beatles collector's library.
