Gregory Peck is magnificent as General Frank Savage, forced to stiffen the morale of his bomber group, and who eventually cracks under the strain himself. Dean Jagger outstanding and thoroughly deserving of his Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor.  After the film was made, Gregory Peck became great friends with the character he had played, the real General Frank Armstrong, who clearly approved of Peck's portrayal of him.
