She performed in England many times, and she had fond friendships with a number of women, one of the few semi-openly lesbian performers of her time. A rare January 1873 program for Lawrence Barrett and Charlotte Cushman in Shakespeare's Scots Play at the Varieties Theatre, New Orleans under Lawrence Barrett's management, with Barrett and Cushman announced to appear together in Shakespeare's Henry VIII.
